Tennis Elbow and Golfers Elbow

Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis or golfer’s elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis are common repetitive-use injuries. Tennis elbow is a tendinopathy of the wrist extensor muscles in our forearm. Pain is experienced on the outer aspect of the elbow and can spread into the forearm and even be felt into the fingers. Golfers elbow is a tendinopathy of the wrist flexor muscles of the forearm. Pain is experienced on the inner side of the elbow and can spread into the forearm and fingers. Pain is usually felt whilst gripping or holding objects, or pushing or pulling, Repetitive motions, particularly with poor biomechanics can cause irritation and degeneration of the tendon. This can be caused by keyboard and mouse work, racket sports, golf, cricket, gripping tools, steering wheels, and musical instruments.

How we treat golfers and tennis elbow:

We utilise a range of techniques for acute and semi-acute elbow tendinopathy ( less than 3 months duration). Massage and stretching of the muscles of the forearm, together with acupuncture needling of trigger point, needling of forearm and needling and laser to the tendon to facilitate healing and biomechanical dysfunctions found. Strengthening and stretching exercises and ergonomic advice.

For chronic tendonopathy (3 months or more), Radial Shockwave therapy can also be used to promote repair. Radial shockwaves are low energy pressure waves that are delivered to damaged tissue. This increases blood flow, has an analgesic effect and stimulates the body’s natural repair and regenerative processes.
