Knee Pain

Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common complaint that affects people of all ages and backgrounds. It can arise from various causes, including injuries, overuse, and underlying medical conditions

Knee pain and discomfort can manifest in a variety of ways, including as a dull ache, sharp or stabbing pain, and sometimes together with stiffness, warmth, and swelling of the knee. Knee function may also be limited by the feeling of weakness, giving way, or even locking of the knee joint, which can be unsettling.

It is important to pay attention to all forms of pain and discomfort in the knees. Their health function is so important to our daily life and early treatment can prevent the worsening of the symptoms and damage to the joint.

Common causes of knee pain and stiffness

  • Sprained or torn ligaments.
  • Damage to cartilage.

How we treat

As with all conditions, an accurate diagnosis is key. We need to understand both the tissue causing pain and any underlying problems causing or maintaining the condition.

Treatment modalities will depend on the condition. For example, chronic tendon problems and bursas respond very well to Shockwave treatment. Osteoarthritis can be well-managed with mobilisation, soft tissue massage, acupuncture needling and laser therapy. If the knee is being affected by dysfunction elsewhere, for example, a sacroiliac joint restriction leading to uneven weight bearing, that would be treated with osteopathic manipulation.

Exercise prescription will be an important factor in all treatment plans.

If we are unable to treat you, alternatives will be discussed and with permission appropriate referrals made.
