Hip Pain

The hip and pelvis region is a complex area with many intersecting muscle, tendons and ligaments influencing one another and the function of the joints in the region. Many factors and conditions can affect hip health and pain in the region is fairly common. The location of pain can be helpful in determining the cause. Osteoarthritis will usually give pain in the groin or buttock and sometimes also knee pain. Pain on the outside of the hip is often from a tendon, muscle or bursa. Pain in the hip or pelvis can radiate from other areas, the low back, for example.

Common causes of hip pain

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome
  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Muscle strains and tears
  • Labral tears
  • Hip impingement

How we treat.

The key to successful treatment is understanding the cause of the pain and also any underlying biomechanical issues which predispose you to the condition.
Once we have understood this, we can build an effective treatment plan.

This may include osteopathic techniques to increase joint mobility and decrease muscle tension, Shockwave to promote healing in tendons, bursas and to treat myofascial pain, trigger point acupuncture to treat contractures in muscle and laser to decrease inflammation and promote healing. Shockwave is particularly useful for Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome.

Therapeutic exercise will always be a cornerstone of recovery.

If we are unable to treat your condition, we will discuss options will you, and with your consent make appropriate referral.
