Back Pain

Back pain is globally the most common cause of musculoskeletal pain. It is estimated that 2 out 3 of us will experience it during our life time and it is the most common condition seen in my clinic.

Back pain can affect anyone at any time in their lives. It can be very debilitating and even life-changing for some.

There are many causes of back pain, including:

  • degenerative changes to the spine such as osteoarthritis
  • traumatic injury: sports injuries, road traffic accidents, falls, etc
  • intervertebral disc injury

Back pain can lead to sciatica: pressure on the nerve which runs down the back of the leg. This can be caused by disc injury, degenerative changes to the disc, inflammation or muscle spasm. It can lead to pain and altered sensation down the back of the leg and into the foot.

How we treat.

Firstly, a through case history and examination are completed to understand the causes of your back pain and how it affects your life. After this, we agree on an appropriate treatment plan for you. Every treatment plan is unique and dependent on the needs and structural problems of that patient.

Osteopathy recognises the complex interconnection between all parts of our body and corrects imbalances and structure dysfunctions, to allow the body to repair itself as quickly as possible.

A wide range of therapies can be used according to your needs.

These include:

  • massage and soft tissue manipulation
  • muscle energy and functional release techniques
  • joint mobilisation and spinal manipulation techniques.
  • fascial release
  • trigger point acupuncture
  • low-light laser therapy
  • Shockwave therapy
  • taping techniques
  • rehabilitation exercises

If immediate treatment is not appropriate, other options will be discussed and referrals made with your permission.
